It’s been some time since I posted anything about Autism. Be assured that we are still affected by it on a daily basis. While providers can’t quite figure out what exactly is going on and can’t agree on what needs to be done all of them have left BigM with an Autism diagnosis. Including his school.
Well, they can’t diagnosis but they re-qualified him for special education services under the Autism code. He is also staying in speech therapy for another year despite the thought in September that he could be out of speech therapy before this school year was up. All of this testing showed that he has made improvement but not enough. For now, it’s Autism.
Today marks the beginning of Autism Awareness month. I’m all for bringing awareness to this. The more people understand this spectrum the better. There is even a light it up blue campaign. By all means, change out your porch light to be blue for the month. The only thing that I ask is that you take a minute to do your research before throwing money at charities. I say this for all charities big and small. Or even better? Adopt a family affected by Autism. There are so many ways that you can make a difference in the life of a family without going out of your way. Some ways that I can think of? A date night for the parents, offer to help with errands either by going with or babysitting so Mom/Dad can get them done. Have a play date because sometimes having another adult around is the best stress relief in the world. Helping around the house or cooking a meal are also ways to help.
If you are more comfortable donating to a charity then be sure to check with sites like charitynaviagtor.org and others to see if the charity operates in a way that you expected. Then be sure to research the charity by clicking around on their website and checking them out. Don’t just give because they are the big name charity on the block.
