Moving Prep: Lists

It takes a lot to prep for moving. I am a lists person. I make lists of lists to make. At least that is what HomemadDady will tell you. We aren’t packing ourselves out to moving our own goods but that doesn’t make it any easier. We have to make sure to have a catalog of everything in case the movers break or lose something. With our situation we also are moving partially into a storage unit so now we have to make a list of what goes to the storage unit and what doesn’t. We also may be traveling by both plane and car. If we split up that way then we have to list out what goes in the car and what goes in the bags on the plane.

Have you ever tried to plan out for an indefinite amount of time when you have 3 little boys under the age of five? What clothes do they need? Toys? Books? School needs? Do I keep out clothes for PirateM through 12 months or just bring 6 months that he is currently wearing? How many outfits do we really need to keep with us? Ok so may be I worry a little too much and try to plan out a little too much but it is what I live for. Lists make it a little easier for me.

I made a list of what we think we need through the summer at the house we are staying at. I also made a list of what book and materials I need to finish out the homeschool semester with BigM. I haven’t made many more lists than that for move preparations. I’m sure more will come at some point.

What are some things we considered must have’s until we are able to move into our own place again? They include:

  • 1 weeks worth of clothes per person, 10 days for the ones who will be potty training
  • pillows
  • blankets
  • 1 backpack of toys per kid
  • essential oils
  • thermometers
  • home management binder
  • baby gates
  • sippy cups
  • pack n’ plays
  • baby monitor
  • white noise machine
  • bag with family tree information

This isn’t my full list. I left off some of the more obvious things like make up and toiletries. We are also bringing whatever paper towels, toilet paper and unopened food with us to contribute to the house. One important detail? The house we are moving into will be quintupling in size when our family moves in and hasn’t had little kids living long term since I was that age. We aren’t staying long term, being several years, but when considering the kids we have decided to err on the side of caution. Here’s to hoping we erred right.

What would you consider essential to live out of a suitcase for a year with kids?
